I am a passionate practitioner and middle leader with experience of teaching across EYFS and Key Stage 1. I hold an MA in Early Years Education for which I researched successful parental engagement strategies. I feel strongly about the positive role of parents/carers in education and research led approaches to developing tailored parental engagement. Research has shown that children’s attainment and attitudes in the EYFS correlates with their later learning and even employment signifying the importance of early intervention and quality first teaching for our youngest pupils. In recent years, I have used my expertise to introduce online profiles systems to a number of schools. Such implementation included training for all staff, policy alterations, implementing bespoke assessment and data systems, and communication with parents/carers. I also recognise and value the need for training local ‘experts’ within a setting to champion new initiatives.
Currently, I am implementing new strategies for developing play-based learning in Year 1 to improve the transition from EYFS to Key Stage 1. The aim is to support pupil well-being, progress and attainment across our federation of schools. We look forward to seeing the positive impact on our pupils and teachers.
From using action research, I have experience of reviewing, developing and implementing phonic schemes. After observing new initiatives in literacy teaching, I recognised that the teaching of phonics needed reviving to remain current. Action research enabled me to collate teacher’s knowledge with data trends to introduce a revitalized phonics scheme for the new academic year. A systematic and consistent approach across year groups is vital, as well as identifying experts to model lessons and coach colleagues. In my experience, I have found the coaching model of lesson modelling, team teaching and observing to be very successful when supporting phonics teaching and in other areas.
My other roles have afforded me experience of leading and managing large teams, planning and delivering training to a range of audiences, developing and improving assessment systems using Excel and Target Tracker and using data to action plan. I look forward to using my skills to support pupils and teachers in other settings.
